Abstract Aim of the work The aim of this work is to give an idea about the different types of headache and its variable presentation in children. Aiming also to find a clinical approach for diagnosis of headache utilizing variable laboratory and radiological diagnostic tools and high-light on the different modalities of treatment. Results • Headache is a common problem affecting a significant number of children and adolescents and is found to be the most prevalent pain complaint. • The International Headache Society (IHS) instituted in 2004 a classification system for headache that has become the standard for headache diagnosis and clinical research. The ICHD-2 categorizes headache into primary headache disorders including migraine, tension-type headache and cluster headache while the secondary headaches are numerous and related to variable factors. • There have been numerous advances in the understanding of the pathopysiology of headache notably migraine headache which now relays on the trigeminovascular theory. • Evaluation of a child presenting with headache starts with accurate detailed history taking together with systemic, neurological, myofacial and ophthalmologic examination, while Radiological evaluation is restricted to special indications and not routinely performed. • Treatment plan is individually tailored according to frequency, severity of headache attacks. |
