Abstract JIA is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory joint disease. JIA may represent not a single disease but a syndrome of diverse causes. It is the most common rheumatic disease in children and adolescents and is a major cause of functional disability JIA is defined as persistent arthritis of unknown etiology that begins before age 16 years and persists for at least six weeks; it is diagnosed after excluding other causes. Diagnosis requires a combination of data from history, physical examination, and laboratory testing. The etiology and pathogenesis of JRA are unclear in spite of numerous investigations. Prognosis has greatly improved as a result of substantial progresses in disease management. The most important new development has been the introduction of drugs such as biological agents, which constitute a valuable treatment option for patients who are resistant to conventional anti-rheumatic agents. |
