Abstract

The current quasi- experimental research aimed to study the effect of an educational program about massage and positive body touch in nursing care of preterms and / or low birth weight infants the study subjects comprised of all available nurses ( 57 nurses) working at the high risk unit affiliated to Mansoura University Childrens Hospital in addition, a sample of convenience composed of 39 admitted preterms and / or low birth weight infants were also concluded. Thus infants were randomly provided into two groups 20 in an experimental group and 19 in control group tools used for data collection included an assessment tool contained a pre- designed questionnaire sheet for nurses as pre/ post test and follow up formats to collect data about the characteristics of nurses assess nurses knowledge about positive body touch and massage in care of preterm/ low birth weight infants the likert- type Rating Scale to assess nurse’s attitude an observation checklist and time scheduled sheet An assessment tool for pattern / low birth weight infants to collect data about the characteristic of pattern / low birth weight infants The clinical indicators tool that was used to assess the effectiveness of the implemented program on pattern / low birth weight infants as regards The physiological clinical indicators neurobehavioral clinical indicators and their behavioral state The fieldwork lasted for 9 months starting from October 1,2004 to June 25 2005 The results of this study revealed significant differences at P < 0.05, 0.01, 0.001 among nurses knowledge attitude and performance furthermore, there are many improvements achieved among the clinical indicators of the preterm and/ or low birth weight infants due to the effect of this intervention nursing program for example the mean daily weight gain among the control group was 8.1± 12.5 gm comparing to 20.7± 9.9 gm in the experimental group which shows a moderate statistically significant difference between the two groups ( t=3.5 p=0.001) therefore positive touch approach including massage and providing support during invasive procedures should be applied as a routine care in the high risk- units.
