Abstract

The lack of accumulation of 17- methyltestosterone (MT) hormone in the pond environment is to be expected. Yet, tilapia are aggressive feeders and would consume all MT-treated feed offered under normal circumstances. Also, in a pond, the breakdown of MT is rapid with little to no effect on non-target fish. Therefore, the testosterone level was low in the farm water and waste water. It was lower also in fish blood, gonads and whole fish body of hormone treated (HT) than in hormone not treated (NT) fish. Moreover, there was atrophy in the gonads of HT than in NT fish gonads.
Thus, it is to recommend the use of 17- methyltestosterone in producing all male mono-sex (sex reversal) Nile tilapia to obtain more fish producting with quick capital cycle and economic as well as environmental friendly product which is safe for human consumption.
