Abstract This study was performed to evaluate the effect of addition of antibacterial agents Vancomycin and Metronidazol to a self etching adhesive system Clearfil SE on the shear bond strength to dentin and antibacterial action compared to an adhesive system already incorporating antibacterial agent Clearfil Protect Bond and to Clearfil SE without addatives. Materials and methods: For both tests, a total of sixty sambles were collected. The prepared teeth specimens were equally divided into four groups of 15 teeth each. Group I utilized fluoride releasing dental adhesive system, group II utilized non fluoride releasing dental adhesive system, Clearfill SE bond, group III utilized non fluoride with Vancomycin 5% addition, group IV utilized Clearfill SE bond with Metronidazol 5% addition . Each group will be further divided into three subgroups of five teeth each, according to the storage time intervals which were, 24 hours, 30 days and 90 days . For all groups the bonding systems were applied to the surfaces according to the manufacturer,s instructions. Shear bond strength of different bonding systems at the composite/dentin interface was measured with a Universal testing machine at crosshead speed 0.5 mm/min. The force was exerted up to the moment of failure and separation of the cylinder occurred . For antibacterial test, Sixty discs were used for testing antibacterial effect to Streptococcus mutans and sixty discs were used for testing antibacterial effect to Lactobacillus salivarius. Sterile swabs were used for spreading the bacterial suspension on blood agar plates .The dentin discs with applied bonding systems at the end of each storage time interval were placed on the cultivated plates. After 48 hours anaerobic incubation , the antibacterial effect of the tested bonding systems was evaluated according to the bacterial growth inhibition noted as growth inhibition zone around the dentin discs. Conclusion Under the conditions of the present study, it may be concluded that : - 1. Regarding the shear bond strength, the addition of antibacterial agents e.g Vancomycin and Metronidazol has little effects on the durability of the restorations. 2 . Self – etching primers are an effective approach for the development of antibacterial adhesives. 3 . Metronidazol may be recommended to be routinely added to the bonding of self- etching adhesives, to improve the antibacterial effects of the adhesive systems. 4 . Further investigations are required to study the changes in the chemical composition of bonding agents by the addition of antibacterial agents, and their effects on the physical and chemical properties of the adhesive systems. 5 . Further investigations are required to detect any adverse pulp reaction to different antibacterial additives to bonding systems. |
