Abstract

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) constitute approximately 20 to 30 percent of all anomalies identified in the prenatal period. CAKUT represent a broad range of disorders that result from abnormal embryogenic renal development due to renal parenchymal malformations, abnormalities in renal migration or abnormalities in the developing collecting system. Evaluation of congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract include several methods which may be done either antenatally or postnatally. The most applicable method for antenatal evaluation is antenatal ultrasonography. The fetal kidney can be detected at the 12th or 15th week of gestation, however, the renal cortex and medulla are not distinctly differentiated from one another until the 20th to 25th week of gestation.
