Abstract During a period of two years 176 cattle suspected to have mucosal disease (in the clinic of cattle diseases, Justus-Liebig University, Giessen,Germany) were clinically examined. EDTA-blood samples and sterile nasal swabs were utilized for isolation and detection of cytopathic and noncytopathic BVD virus on foetal calf lung cell culture. Interference and immunofluoresence techniques were used for the detection of ncp-BVD virus on the inoculated FCL cell culture. The isolation of BVD virus was possible in 148 cases. The sera of five of these 148 cattle were shown to contain BVD virus neutralizing antibodies. Direct ELISA was used for detection of BVDV antigen in 70 buffy coats. All samples which were positive in cell culture were also positive in ELISA and 3 cattle were positive in ELISA while negative by cell culture method. PCR was used for the detection of BVD virus RNA isolated from leukocytic fractions from 36 cattle, only one animal was positive in PCR while negative in cell culture. |
