Abstract Although anaesthetists agree that difficult airway is a serious problem, there is no agreement about the definition of difficult airway. The definitions used for difficult intubation are inconsistent, confusing and potentially misleading. Difficult intubation is the clinical situation in which a conventionally trained anesthesiologist experiences difficulty with tracheal intubation, difficulty with face mask ventilation of the upper airway, or both. All guidelines should strongly recommend an early call for help if any problem arises. Maintenance of oxygenation throughout the whole procedure should be recognized as the most important imperative, and the option of awakening the patient at different steps should always be considered. compares the recommendations from national societies concerning the four clinical scenarios. |
