Abstract Surgery is considered the cornerstone for management of cancer rectum and it continues to develop. Conservative surgery in low rectal carcinoma allows radical en block excision of the rectum and the mesorectum containing the draining lymph nodes by using Total Mesorectal Excision technique, thus allowing the lowest incidence of local recurrence and restoring bowel continuity with preservation of anal sphincters and autonomic nerves of the pelvis, thus preventing urinary and sexual dysfunction that are commonly associated with conventional rectal surgery. This work aims to review the literature and relevant clinical trials concerned with the patient life style and functional and oncological outcome of conservative surgery in low rectal carcinoma and comparing them to the conventional rectal surgery |
