Abstract

To determine the effect of different analgesic agents on
intrapartum fetal heart rate tracings.
Over the last 35 years it has become common practice for
obstetricians to use cardiotocography (CTG) to monitor fetal
wellbeing in labor. Despite the widespread use of epidural
analgesia, systemic analgesics remain an important part of
intrapartum pain relief in modem day obstetric.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of some
analgesic agents on intrapartum fetal heart rate tracings.
The drugs used were meperidine (Pethidine) I mg/kg,
nalbuphine (nubain) 0.2 mg/kg and butorphanol (Stadol) 0.04
mg/kg.
Sixty women with uncomplicated singleton vertex
gestations at term who presented to labor and delivery suite of
Zagazig University Hospitals during period from July 1997 to
August 1999, were enrolled in this study.
