Abstract

The most common device used to protect the pipelines against transient pressure is the air chamber. A computer model VSIZE is developed to calculate and to plot the maximum upsurges a nd downsurges for a simple discharge pipeline provided with an air chamber and check valve between the pump and the air chamber. Also, The VSIZE model used to estimate the air chamber volume. The VCHART model is developed from VSIZE model to generalize the design charts by using basic parameters such as pipeline constant, air chamber parameter, pipe wall friction; orifice resistance, relative distance, and relative height of any point along the pipeline. The effect of each parameter on the air chamber volume was considered separately. A differential orifice was recommended and included in the model. The main contribution of this study was to get the suitable air chamber volume from the design charts to prevent column separation and cavitation at any high points of any arrangement of pipelines and check the safety of an existm~ air chamber volume for any modified pipeline system.
