Abstract

The study was conducted at the OPC of psychiatry at MUH, from 9/2005 to 12/2007. A survey study was carried out using the CDI to identify the prevalence of depression in children and adolescents from 8-18 years. The Depth study included the depressed children and adolescents (CDI ≥25). The study’s main hypotheses were that depression and cognitive distortions are prevalent in children and adolescents, for which CBT is effective. The main conclusions were; The prevalent of depression in children and adolescents was (12.9%), Depression in young people includes DSM-IV depressive disorders, as well as minor depressive disorder and subsyndromal symptomatic depression. Negative automatic thoughts are prevalent in children and adolescents. Cognitive behavior therapy is at least as effective as fluoxetine in treatment of childhood and adolescent depression. The degree of improvement was lower in children and adolescents with positive family history of psychiatric illness, as well as in those having positive life stressors. Parental rejection and parental absence were the most predictors of the degree of improvement on regression analysis (P≤.05).
