Abstract

Many plants are known for their therapeutic properties and hold the promise of serving as a source of potentially useful medicinal agent. The current study deals with two families that have been always a target of many research programms in terms of chemical, structural determination, quantitation and screening for biological activities because of their alkaloid content. Families like Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae are always sources of potentially useful medicinal drugs e.g antiturnour, antiviral, analgesic anticholinestrase and anti-inflammatory drug.
The present work includes two parts: PART 1
STUDY OF ALKALOIDAL CONTENTS OF SOME
PANCRATIUM SPECIES FAllLY
AMARYLLIDACEAE.
1- isolation and characterisation of five alkaloids from Pa,zcratiuin foetidurn Pomel:
The alkaloidal extract of the plant after isolation of the major alkaloid was chromatographed over silica gel column followed by preparative TLC and fractional crystallization to yield five alkaloids identified as follows:
Colourless needle-shaped crystals, m.wt. 223, m.p. 140°C and was identified as trispheridine using HPLC, UV., and MS.
It is the first isolation of trispheridine from this plant.
Colourless needle-shaped crystals, m.wt 301, m.p. 198°C and
was identified as crinamine using MS. This is the first isolation
of crinamine from genus Pancratiurn. <Prismatic colourless crystals ,m.wt. 317, m.p.; 189°C and identified as haemanthidine using HPLC, UV, and MS. It is the
first time to be isolated from this plant.
Colourless needle- shaped crystals, m.wt. 287, m.p 253 256°C and was identified as lycorine using HPLC, UV, MS, ‘H, 13CNMR and 2D-NMR spectral analyses. It is the first isolation of lycorine from this plant.
Colourless needle - shaped crystals, m.wt. 271, m.p. 210°C
rnd was identified as crinine. This is the first report of isolation
)f this compound from the genus Pancratium..
