Abstract

Care during antenatal period is very important to pregnant mothers as well as babies . Therefore Ministry of Health has established M.C.H centers in every city . At the same time mothers can receive care through the outpatient of the maternity hospitals . Early and regular attendance of the pregnant mother to the antenatal clinic for health supervision is very important, and is imperative for high risk group . late booking was defined as booking for antenatal care after the first trimester . The aim of the study was to determine the magnitude of late antenatal booking, and its causes in M.C.H centers in Zagazig city . Subjects and methods : A convenience sample composed of all pregnant mothers attending two M.C.H centers in Zagazig city in a period of 6 months . They were ( 200 ) pregnant mothers ( 50 of them were early bookers and 150 were late bookers ) . Data were collected using : An interview questionnaire sheet was used to collect data about demographic characteristics, and socioeconomics condition of the family such as age, education , and occupation of the mother and father , family size , and housing condition . Data about past family history , past obstetric history such as age of first pregnancy , number of gravida , numbers of abortion and numbers of live children . It also collected data about care given to the pregnant mother as numbers and regularity of visits , the cause of coming late for care , physical assessment, and medical examination , including measuring weight , blood pressure , urine and blood investigations , vaccination and health education give to the mother . Results revealed the following : 1-The majority of women ( 75 % ) booked late for antenatal care . 2-The majority of mothers were housewives ( 94 % ), from urban area ( 92 % of early booking mothers and 88.7 % of late booking group ) , married at age from ( 20 – 25 ) years old , and two thirds of early booking mothers ( 66 % ) were living at middle socioeconomic standard compared to half of late booking mothers . 3-Half of both groups had a family history of hypertension , liver diseases and diabetes . While one third of late booking group and more than quarter of early booking group had a history of lung diseases , kidney diseases , and gynecological disorders . 4- Nearly half of early booking mothers had a short pregnancy space ( less than 2 years ) compared to (31.7% ) of late booking . 5-Only ( 17.6% ) and ( 22 . 5% ) respectively of early and late booking mothers had their last delivery with cesarean section . 6-Nearly half of both groups were suffering from anemia , hypertension , hypotension and kidney diseases . 7-Only ( 8% ) of early booking women didn’t want their pregnancy compared to ( 20% ) of late booking women . 8-The highest frequency, and regularity of antenatal visits were among early booking women ( 50% ) compared to ( 38% ) of late booking group . 9-More than one third of late booking mothers didn’t come for antenatal care as a result of ignorance about the importance of antenatal care . 10- More than half of both groups have got benefit from limited cost .While ( 36% ) of both groups have got benefit from checkup ,and physical examination and ( 23.3% ) of late booking mothers took vaccination only . 11- Half of early booking didn’t decide about the place of delivery.
