Abstract

Emergency contraception is birth control that women can use to prevent pregnancy after known or suspected failure of contraception or unprotected intercourse , including sexual assault. Emergency contraception (EC) has enormous potential to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and abortions. EC methods work through interfering with some of the discrete steps of the reproductive process as: Follicle maturation, the ovulatory process, sperm migration into and through the fallopian tube, zygote development in the fallopian tube, zygote transport through the fallopian tube. Candidates for emergency contraception are women who have had recent unprotected intercourse (including sexual assault), or those who have had a failure of another method of contraception (eg, broken condoms). There are no medical contraindications to use of emergency contraception. The study suggests administering emergency contraception as soon as possible, but up to 120 hours, after an episode of unprotected intercourse in women who wish to prevent pregnancy. The study suggests giving women a home supply of emergency contraceptives or encouraging them to buy them in advance.
