Abstract SCs are special kind of cells that locate in most multi cellular organisms and have the capacity to renew itself and give rise to any specialized cell type of the body. Researchers have looked for ways to use SCs to replace cells or tissues that are damaged or diseased. SCs sources are either embryonic SCs (ESCs) or non embryonic. ESCs are derived from embryonal tissues as inner cell mass of blastocyst, gonadal ridge and teratocarcinomas. Non embryonal SCs are either foetal or adult SCs. Adult SCs(ASCs) are located in most body tissues and organs such as bone marrow (hematopoietic and mesenchymal SCs), liver, adipose tissue, skin….etc. In human skin, SCs are located in the bulge region of hair follicle, inter-follicular epidermis, glandular epithelial cells and the dermis. There are many molecular markers indicating that keratinocytes are transitioned from a proliferative state to a differentiated state and these markers are called the “differentiation products”. Epidermal SCs can be isolated by using these markers, for example β-1 and α6 integrins. SCs had been applied in many aspects such as basic researches to explain foetal development. Drug study can also be done on dividing SCs cultures instead of animal for knowing their efficacy and safety of the newly discovered drugs. . There is an evidence that cancer stem cells (CSC) play a role in the pathogenesis of cutaneous malignancies. So, the mechanisms by which cancer cells produce cancers can be studied and this can provide future new cancer therapies. |
