Abstract

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is the downward displacement of structures that are normally located adjacent to the vagina and their associated vaginal segments into or through the vagina. This condition is common, affecting a progressively larger percentage of women as age advances. There is an 11% life-time risk of undergoing surgery for prolapse and more than 30% require repeat surgery. Recent advances in the field of pelvic floor surgery include; first, better knowledge and understanding of normal support of the pelvis specially the “DeLancey Levels” of pelvic connective tissue. Second, evaluation of POP through the development of QoL questionnaires as well as POP-Q classification and newer imaging diagnostic techniques. Furthermore, there has been considerable development of treatment of POP. As regard conservative treatment it includes; pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation, symptom directed therapy and use of intravaginal devices. A new Colpexin Sphere was introduced in the United States in May 2006. Surgical treatment also has many advances such as site specific defect repair, use of prosthetic materials, Sling procedures and laparoscopic management.
