Abstract The main aim of the present research is to study the structural behavior of short CFT columns under axial loads. To achieve this aim, a three dimensional model has been developed with the aid of the finite element ”ANSYS” program. The following two parameters have been investigated: grade of concrete (uniaxial strength of concrete) and the aspect ratio (concrete core diameter divided by tube thickness). For the verification of the results, nine CFT columns have been axially loaded gradually up to failure. Each column is 100 mm core diameter and 300 mm high. The core diameter and height dimensions have been chosen such that a material failure (not a buckling failure) can be ascertained. Three grades of concrete and three values for tube thickness have been used. For each column, the ultimate load and the amount of contraction have been recorded. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental results has been made. |
