Abstract

Reflexology is a powerful natural health science that studies the practice of stimulating points on the feet, hands or ears by application of pressure, stretch, and movement to specific points that it will have a beneficial effect on some other parts of the body, improve general health or will break up patterns of stress in other parts of the body.
Reflexology has crossed all boundaries, circling the world a few times. The history of reflexology finds its roots in cultures around the world. Many cultures use feet as a way of healing the entire body. Footwork has been around for a long time. Its traces can be found throughout most ancient peoples like Egypt, China, India, Bible, Muslims and Hindus. Native American culture speaks through oral history of the tradition of bathing and treating feet to help bring about balance.
Conclusion
Reflexology is a complementary therapy intended for use alongside conventional medicine care and not as a replacement. From the few controlled trials taken together, results suggest that reflexology is a valid method for assessing health status and for the treatment of different diseases. But, further researches using large numbers of patients and for long period in controlled clinical trials are needed for a full evaluation of effectiveness of reflexology in pain and illness. Otherwise, results do not suggest there is a specific therapeutic effect of reflexology therapy. Furthermore, there are no scientific studies proving that how reflexology actually works.
There may be no universal explanation as to why patients use reflexology. Gender, age, income, education, degree of underlying psychological stress, and desire to regain ’greater self control’ may all influence use. Reflexology brings total relaxation, it can complement any health care work. Considering its therapeutic effects, there are few contraindications to its application. Therefore, one of reflexologist ’s goals is to reach as many soles as possible, hoping to bring fulfillment and excellence back into their lives by providing a stress reliever.
Recommendations
Our recommendations are to exist more controlled trials and researches to ensure quality of reflexology treatment, reliability, safety and efficacy. And to encourage health professionals and patients to support reflexology practitioners and believe in reflexology.
