Abstract

The Middle-Upper Eocene sediments of the Fayum District is represented by Gehannam, Birket Qarun and Qasr El-Sagha formations. According to both detailed field and laboratory analyses, the sediments of this time span were deposited in transitional environment between continent and marine as deltaic facies. This delta was wave dominated delta and started with delta front represented by Gehannam Formation with a thickness of 20 m then followed by distributary mouth bar represented by Birket Qarun formation of 50 m in thickness while, both lower delta plain of 99 m in thickness in addition to the upper delta plain forming 38 m in thickness representing the lower part of Qasr El-Sagha Formation. All of them topped by aeolian facies with a thickness of 45 m which represented by the most upper part of Qasr El-Sagha Formation.
The studied sedimentary record represent an active prograding deltaic sequence in its final stages with contemporaneous DROP in sea level accompanied with climatic conditions varied from wet to extreme aridity reflects an intense desertification, especially in the northern parts of the study area.
