Abstract

This study was conducted from October 2007 to April 2009. Patients were selected from Mansoura University Hospitals (Gastroenterology Surgical Center; Children; Internal Medicine Hospitals; Tropical and Chest departments). Three groups were selected; 30 hydatidosis patients with no other parasitic infections; 30 cases with other parasitic infections including S. mansoni, Fasciola, H. nana, E. histolytica and Giardia. and 10 healthy parasite-free cases as controls.
As regards the hydatidosis patients; 20 patients were males and 10 patients were females; male to female ratio was approximately 2:1. However, statistically there was no significant association between hydatid disease and different sex where 2 = 0.021, p= 0.884, relative risk (females / males) = 0.958.
In this study, age of the study group ranged from 10 to 60 years old in addition to two male children, 5 and 8 years. Age groups distribution was as follows up to 10 years: 10.0%; > 10-20 years: 10.0%; > 20-30= 10.0%; > 30-40 years: 16.7% and patients > 40 years were 53.3%. However, there was no statistically significant association between hydatid disease and different age groups where 2 = 0.000, p= 1.000, relative risk (above 30 years / up to 30 years)= 1.000. The mean of age in hydatidosis patients was 37.60 + 15.77 years and in controls was 37.48 + 16.02 years with no significant difference.
Twenty four patients were from Dakahlia Governorate. In addition, two patients were from Gharbia Governorate and one patient from each other Governorates which are Kafr El Sheikh, Sharkia, Qalubia and Damietta. However, there was no significant association between hydatid disease and different localities where 2= 0.019, p= 0.890, relative risk (urban / rural)= 0.962.
The problem of hydatidosis in our locality was found among farmers, housewives, employees, teachers, students and butchers in 10, 6, 5, 2, 5, 2 respectively. However, statistically there was no significant association between hydatid disease and different occupation where 2= 0.326, p= 0.568, relative risk (farmers/others)= 0.846.
There was 12 cases (40.0%) of hydatidosis were in intimate contact with dogs while 18 cases (60.0%) were not in contact with dogs. Also, 2 cases (6.7%) were owing dogs and 28 cases (93.3%) were not owing dogs. It was noticed that there was a significant association between hydatid disease and contact with dogs where 2= 5.609, p= 0.018, relative risk (contact with dogs/no contact with dogs)= 1.926. Those with contact with dogs had 1.926 risk of hydatid disease as those without contact with dogs.
