Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of low intensity pulsed ultrasound in mandibular fracture healing and it was formed of two parts as the following:- A)The experimental part was conducted on twenty four male rabbits divided into: Control group:- In which twelve rabbits subjected to a unilateral mandibular fracture which fixed by using the titanium microplates and screws system. Study group:- In which the same proceudres were done, then the fracture site was exposed to the low intensity pulsed ultrasound device, the fracture site of the mandible was subjected to the histological study to assess the healing process. B)The clinical part was conducted on twelve patients with mandibular fractures divided into: Control group:- In which six patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using 2.0 mm titanium miniplating system. Study group:- In which six patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using the same type of 2.0 mm titanium miniplating system, then the fracture site was subjected to the low intensity pulsed ultrasound device. The results revealed better and faster healing of the mandibular fractures treated by internal fixation and low intensity pulsed ultrasound, so ultrasound has emerged as a safe, practical, and effective adjunct treatment administered without pain, without anaesthesia or hospital admission.
