Abstract

Selective tissue corneal transplantation becomes the procedure of choice in the management of many corneal diseases as compared to full-thickness corneal transplantation i.e. penetrating keratoplasty, because it is an extra ocular procedure, it has a more limited risk of complications, such as anterior synechiae, secondary glaucoma, or endophthalmitis .
The philosophy of lamellar keratoplasty (LK) is to selectively replace only the diseased tissue and leave the healthy tissue intact, to resect the least amount of tissue for the greatest amount of good quality.
Surgical Techniques in Lamellar Corneal Surgery covers a broad range, starting from the anterior corneal surface and progressing posteriorly towards the Descemet’s membrane and endothelium .
Refractive lamellar corneal surgery has been used for the correction of refractive errors for over 50 years. Refractive lamellar corneal surgery attempts to remove, add, or modify the corneal stroma or add synthetic components so that the anterior corneal curvature is altered as desired .
Laser in situ Keratomileusis is a form of lamellar refractive surgery that has enjoyed a great interest since the early 1990s. Now that LASIK has become an established procedure for many refractive surgeons, and probably the most popular form of lamellar refractive surgery .
In this review, the historic perspective of lamellar keratoplasty is presented. The techniques and instrumentation from the past to the present-day surgical techniques are reviewed to provide the present status of lamellar corneal surgery. Also it covers the classification of lamellar corneal surgery and their indications.
