Abstract

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has several advantages; among these are ready accessibility, portability, quick scan time, and better patient tolerability. The dynamic, real-time nature of sonography requires personal interaction with the patient, often resulting in a more directed examination, specific for each individual.
-The most common indication for shoulder ultrasonography (US) is the diagnosis of rotator cuff disease. However, there is a spectrum of non-rotator cuff abnormalities that are amenable to US examination.
-Rotator cuff sonography has the potential to serve as a screening examination for patients with shoulder pain. It will be most useful in patients over 50 years of age, who might be expected to have larger lesions. In younger patients with persistent symptoms, negative sonographic findings should be followed by additional examinations. In the postoperative patient, sonography is the best examination.
-Finally, musculoskeletal sonography is gaining popularity for the evaluation of the shoulder joint disorders.
