Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of soft laser on healing of buccal mucosal traumatic ulceration and identify the role of vascular endothelial growth factor during ulcer healing in albino rats, histologically and immunohistochemically.
Materials and Methods: Sixty male albino rats were used in this study. The animals were divided into 3 groups. Group I: consisted of 10 rats, used as a control group. Group II: consisted of 25 rats. The animals in this group were subjected to induced ulcer. Group III: consisted of 25 rats. The animals in this group were subjected to induced ulcer, the same as in group II. Moreover, the animals were exposed to soft laser (20 W) for 20 seconds at 1,3,7,14,21 days.
Results: In the control group; the buccal mucosa consisted of normally keratinized stratified squamous epithelium overlying the lamina propria. In group II at 1 day; the ulcerative area showed discontinuity of the epithelium and the underlying connective tissue, the granulation tissue showed inflammatory cells infiltration and dilated blood vessels as well as in group III. After 3 days, in group II. There was slight proliferation in the covering epithelium and formation of granulation tissue. While in group III, there was more granulation tissue. In group II at 7 days, the partial healing, compared with group III, which showed advanced healing of the connective tissue and marked reepithelization. After 14 days in group II, the section showed marked epithelization. In group III, there was advanced healing process. At 21 days, group (II) revealed healing of the epithelium and connective tissue, group (III) showed complete restoration of the normal epithelial and connective tissue architecture.
Conclusion: The maximum activity of VEGF occurs approximately at the 3rd to 7th days after injury.Vascular endothelial growth factor is a significant factor in wound healing.Low level laser therapy can be considered as an effective aid in promotion and acceleration the healing of oral ulcers.
