Abstract Converging all traffic types as fax, data and video into a single multi-service network is a hot topic in the networking industry, as combining a company’s various types of communications over a common infrastructure are appealing offering flexible, scalable, and cost efficient services, This type of multipurpose network is called a converged network or Next Generation Network (NGN). This thesis illustrated the meaning of convergence, its advantages, its applications and challenges. The convergence of different traffic types from different worlds (circuit and packet switching worlds) will yield new challenges like QoS (Quality of Service) of the real time traffic used to be in circuit switched networks for example QoS in a voice network means that you have to take care of some factors as bandwidth , delay , jitter and packet loss , the other important challenge will be the security of the different traffic types carried over this converged networks as converging both real traffic with data traffic represents a new vector for potential security issues, as the packetized real time communication (as voice) will be more accessible and easier to be intercepted , for example one could potentially intercept a voice communication by capturing the associated packets as they traverse a large network , so real time traffic is vulnerable to many of the same attacks, intrusions, and other security threats as data networks. The concept of network security will change, this change presents new challenges for network professionals and network security is playing a bigger role than ever. How can a converged network be secured to provide the same type of worry free communications that traditional phones lines have provided for years, while not impeding the performance of critical real time applications. |
