Abstract

Asthma is the most common chronic inflammatory condition in children and adolescents. The morbidity and mortality associated with asthma are suspected to be a result of poor adherence. So that the main aims of this study were to assess the level of compliance of adolescents with asthma management plan, assess the factors affecting compliance of adolescents with asthma to asthma management plan and design, implement and evaluate the effect of an educational program for adolescents with asthma. A quasi-experimental study was done on a convenience sample of 100 adolescent with asthma attending the Allergy Out- Patient Clinics of Children’s University Hospital and Main University Hospital in Mansoura. Two tools were used in collecting the required data: a structured interview sheet and adherence scale which adopted from Jacobson et al, (1990) and was used after doing the necessary modifications by the researcher. The results of the study revealed that there was a highly significant statistical difference between adolescent’s knowledge about asthma and its management plan and their compliance to asthma management plan pre and post program implementation. The study concluded that there was a positive effect of the educational program in improving adolescents’ knowledge about asthma and its management plan and their compliance to asthma management plan. The study recommended that educational opportunities should be expanded to reach adolescents in a variety of settings such as pharmacies, schools, community centers and homes.
