Abstract Monitoring of 15 organochlorine pesticide residues was carried out in 594 samlpes of animal origin collected from Assiut governorate, 170 samples in 1988, 144 samples in 1989 and 280 samples in 1992. Samples are classified as follows: 348 tissue samples of which 34 (14, 10 and 10) liver, 38 (14, 10 and 14) muscle, 24 (14, 10) kidneys and 104 (14, 10 and 80) adipose tissue of buffaloes; and 32 (12, 10 and 10) liver, 32 (12, 10 and 10) muscle, 22(12, 10) kidneys and 62 (12, 10 and 40) adipose of cattle in 1988, 1989 and 1992, respectively. 246 milk samples; 137 (56, 25 and 56) of buffaloes and 109 (28, 21 and 60) of cows in 1988, 1989 and 1992 respectively. Organochlorine pesticides analysed were selected according to their hazards, persistence and frequent use in the environment. Multiple residue analysis methods were adopted for qualitative and quantitative analysis of DDT and its metabolites (p, p -DDT, o, p -DDT, p,p -DDT and p,p -DDD), HCH isomers (alpha, beta, gamma and delta), aldrin, dieldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, endrin, HCB and transnonachlor. |
