Abstract

This thesis deals with the field occurrence, sedimentological characteristics, mineralogical and chemical composition and macrofossil content of some islands occurred in the El Burullus Lagoon, north central Nile Delta, Egypt. This study aims also to shed light on the depositional environments and the factors affecting origin and development of these islands. To achieve these aims eighty nine surface, ditch and core samples have been collected from the islands of Aradat Al-Maqraah, Al-Gharbiyah, Al-Dakhlah, Al-Kom Al-Akhdar, Az-Zanqah, Al-Ghariq Al-Qibli, Ibsak and Sinjar. These samples have been subjected to detailed petrological, mineralogical and chemical analyses in addition to determination of their macrofauna content. Based on the field occurrence, sedimentological characteristics, and macrofaunal content, the islands in El Burullus Lagoon are classified into two main types; sandy and muddy. Each one has its own characteristics. The sandy islands may be formed as eolian deposits. This is because their sands are brownish yellow to yellow in colour, fine to medium grained and well sorted and have no macrofauna. The muddy islands were probably formed as ancient fluviatile levees or parts of flood plains. This is because they are composed of laminated mud that contain plant remains, carbonate nodules and some fresh molluscs. They also extend in the NE and NW directions indicating the northward flow of the Saiatic old Nile branch. Both of the sea level oscillation and the organisms played also a considerable role on formation and development of the studied islands.
