Abstract

Accurate diagnosis of parasitic infection is considered the cornerstone in dealing with it. Working from this fact, many efforts have been given to develop the field of diagnostic medical parasitology, aiming to recognize new parasites, use alternative diagnostic procedures or reevaluate the used diagnostic techniques. Among newly introduced diagnostic maneuvers in parasitology, endoscopy and surgical interference have been widely used nowadays. The major advantages of endoscopy in evaluation of diseases include direct visualization, resulting in more accurate and sensitive evaluation of mucosal lesions, the ability to obtain biopsy specimens from superficial lesions and to perform therapeutic interventions. Surgical interference has greatly improved regarding the preoperative radiological investigations, the less risky anesthetics, the procedure, the approach of entrance, the instruments used for the operation and the postoperative care. Therefore, exploratory surgery or biopsy, which may be the only diagnostic and therapeutic measure available for a suspicious lesion or mass, are now performed with the least risk to patients. ♦ Aim of Work: - 1. Review the different types of endoscopy in the digestive system, respiratory system, genitourinary system, central nervous system, eye and ear. 2. Study the role of these endoscopes in diagnosis of some parasitic diseases, illustrating the findings and giving examples of reported cases. 3. Evaluate the role of different surgical maneuvers, including biopsies and aspirations taking, in diagnosis of parasitic diseases. ♦ Conclusion: - The developments seen in all medical fields changed the diagnostic map of many parasites. This is why, we recently encounter endoscopy and surgical interference more frequently with many parasites. These procedures was considered as invasive, risky and not preferred by many physicians despite their accuracy. The facilities present nowadays make them easier, faster and frequently done for many other pathological conditions. Future carries more advance in these measures, so we must be aware of all parasites from the endoscopic and surgical aspect to keep on line with everyday advances.
