Abstract

This study was performed in Internal Medicine & Infectious and Fish Diseases Dept. Faculty of Veterinary. Medicine, Mansoura University:- This study was carried out on 2448 sheep of different ages, localities in El-Dakahilia governorate from different flocks varied in numbers examined clinically for nervous signs.Prevalence of nervous manifestations in sheep revealed that 105 from 2448 examined sheep from 6 flocks (4.9%) were suffering from nervous manifestations, total case fatality rate and mortality rate were 77.14 % and 3.3 % respectively, the group of sheep aging 3-6 months old was the highest with nervous manifestations due to listeriosis in a percent of 7.4%, , winter season recorded the highest rate (7.08%)of ovine encephalitic listeriosis, then autumn (5.98%) followed by summer and spring (3.41%) and (3.3%) respectively. The total isolation of Listeria monocytogenes was 8 isolates out of 30 samples examined (26.66%), from which 3 isolates were biotype 1/2a (37.5%), 3 isolates were biotype 1/2b (37.5%). Ampicillin had the highest effectivness 62.5%, then penicillin G 50%, and erythromycin 50% followed by amikacin 37.5%. Examination of CSF of diseased and control healthy sheep revealed significance elevation of total cell count, total protein and creatinin kinase of diseased than control sheep. The immune response of sheep vaccinated with Listeria monocytogenes vaccine showed increase in serum neutralizing antibody titers which gradually increased after 2nd dose of injection till reach maximum level at 15 days of the second dose compared with non vaccinated control sheep. The vaccine was evaluated by challenge in rabbits and measuring of Nitric oxide and lysozyme.
