Abstract Heavy metals can be considered as the most insidious and dangerous category of pollutants in the sea. They join halogenated hydroc-arbons in being presistent contaminants; once added to the environment they are not readily converted into something harmless. They are often accumulated in the tissues of organs which have taken them up, and this leads to an amplification of concentration of them in animals higher up to food chain. |
