Abstract

-preliminary phytochemical screening :
The preliminary phytochemical screening of the studied plants revealed the presence of carbohydrates and /or glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, in S. nigrum and the same compounds except saponins in P. harmala.
2- purification, Isolation and identification of isolated alkaloids :
a)The total ethanolic extract of P. harmala alkaloids was chromatographed on silics gel G. plats using the solvent system chloroform : ace ton – methanol ( 35:15:10) , revealed three major spots. These were identical with those of the isolated alkaloide ( fractions A, B and C) having the same Rf values, 0.69, 0.24 and 0.17, respectively.
b)T.L.C of the two fractions A and C together with authentic harming and harlmaline gave identical Rf values ( 0.69 and 0.17 respectively ) and was characterized with orange red colour.
c)I.R spectral analysis of the crystalline fractions A and C showed that they were identical with the authentic harmine and harmaline.
d)Fraction B ( unknown ) has an Rf value of 0.24, melted at 112 c and its I.R spectrum was done.
e)The total ethanolic extract of S.nigrum alkaloids was chromatographed on silica gel G. plats using the solvent system benzene, methanol ( 5 : 4), revealed the presence of two major spot a these were identical with that of the isolated alkaloids, ( fractions ( A) Rf 0.56 ( B) Rf 0.33 ) having Rf values 0.56 and 0.31 respectively.
f)Fraction A and B melts at 270 c and 210 c respectively.
