Abstract

It is indisputable that Egypt now is suffering from severe increase in population. Any attempt to overcome soil salinity and alkalinity may help in a partial solving the problem of the contrast between the rapidity with which the population grows and the relative slowness in the growth of agricultural production.
The present investigation was carried out on salt affected soils in the northern areas of Nile Delta which are subjected to reclamation in order to clarify the mode of formation and diagnosis of such soils which may help in soil improvement or reclamation.
This study carried out on 80 soil samples collected from 20 profiles shown in map (1), bearing in mind that the selection in this way cover a wide range of variations in most of soil physical and chemical properties due to the effect of salinity and or alkalinity. Soil profiles were sampled at 30.0 cm increments to the depth of ground water level.
