Abstract

Although carbamate pesticides are widely used, research has shown that they have various side effects. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the cytotoxic effects of lannate on the chromosomes of mice in acute and chronic exposure and histopathological effects of lannate on liver, kidney and spleen of mice in chronic exposure. Another aim of the study was to investigate the protective effect of olive oil against the cytotoxic effects of lannate. Seventy-Six Swiss albino mice were exposed to various concentrations of lannate, lannate and olive oil or were kept as controls. Animals were sampled at different times, acute exposure; at 24 & 48 hrs and chronic exposure; at two months. Lannate increased the number of structural and numerical chromosomal aberrations and micronucleus formation in both the acute and chronic exposure. On contrary, Lannate produced no effects on the rate of cell division (mitotic index) at either acute or chronic exposure. Lannate produced pathological lesions on the liver, kidney and spleen of mice in the chronic exposure. Moreover, The use of olive oil gave promising results against lannate toxicity as it significantly decreased the frequency of chromosomal aberrations and histopathological alterations.
