Abstract

This study was performed in Surgery, Radiology and Anesthesiology Dept. Faculty of Veterinary. Medicine, Mansoura University:- Forty five animals divided into two parts. The first part was 21 healthy donkeys. The second part was twenty four animals (9 horses and 15 donkeys). Animals used in this study were randomly assigned into five groups, eleven animals for group (I, II, III) and six animals for group (IV, V). Animals were premedicated with xylazine 2 % in a dose of 1.1 mg/kg or medetomidine 1‰ in a dose of (7ug/ kg) given intravenously, and then received one of the five anesthetic regimens. Anesthesia was induced and maintained by infusion of a freshly prepared mixture of 500 mg xylazine Hcl, 50 gm guaifenesin and 2gm ketamine Hcl in 1 liter of warm dextrose 5 % ( Regimen I, XGK) or induced and maintained by infusion of a freshly prepared mixture of 500 mg xylazine Hcl, 50 gm guaifenesin and 4 gm thiopental sodium in 1 liter of warm dextrose 5% (Regimen II, XGT) or induced and maintained by infusion of a freshly prepared mixture of 500 mg xylazine Hcl, 40 mg midazolam and 2 gm ketamine Hcl in 1 liter of dextrose 5% (Regimen III, XMK) or induced and maintained by infusion of a freshly prepared mixture of 3 mg medetomidine, 40 mg midazolam and 2 gm ketamine in 1 liter of dextrose 5% ( Regimen IV, MKM) or induced and maintained by infusion of a freshly prepared mixture of 3 mg medetomidine, 50 gm guaifenesin and 4 gm thiopental sodium in 1 liter of warm dextrose 5% ( Regimen V, MGT). The five anesthetic regimens produced a safe method of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) for short and prolonged surgical procedures under field conditions in equidae. All regimens showed smooth induction, similar sedation, analgesia and muscle relaxation. The longest recovery time and poor quality of recovery made XGT and MGT regimens less preferable for debilitating animals than XGK, XMK and MKM regimens.
