Abstract The purpose of the present investigation was to study the effect of applying a sludge collected from Mansoura Sanitary Drainage Station into four soil types ( clayey, saline, calcareous and sandy ) on the yield and yield components of soybean and barley plants , as well as to evaluate of the sludge to avoid environmental pollution from chemical fertilizer usage and to study the residual effect of the sludge. Two pot experiments were carried out at Soils Dep, Fac. Of Agric. Mansoura Univ. During 97/98 and 1998 seasons. Four types of soils were collected from the surface layer ( 0-30 cm) to represent : a-Clayey soil, was taken from the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agric, Mansoura Univ. b-Sandy soil, was collected from Qalabsho region, Dakahlia Governorate. c-Saline soil ( clayey ), was taken from El-Senbelawain region, Dakahlia Governorate. d-Calcareous soil, was taken from Janakleis region, Alexandria Governorate. Sewage sludge samples were taken from Mansoura Sanitary Drainage Station, El-Mansoura, Dakahlia Governorate and collected every two months for a year. The collected sludge samples ( 6 samples) were air-dried thoroughly mixed and ground to obtain one mixed sample used in the present study. Some chemical and physical characteristics of the experimental soils and sludge samples are determined. Both crops of soybean and barley were tested on the four types of soils with applying different levels of sludge with the recommended mineral fertilizers of N, P and K. Thus, four treatments were used as following: 1-Control ( soil without application sludge). 2-Soil + 0.5% sludge. |
