Abstract

Nervous diseases are less common to occur in sheep but with a dangerous state due to the period of illness and high mortality rate. Encephalitic Listeriosis shown incidence rate of (3.74%) from the all examined sheep and appear to affect mostly the age group more than 12 month old (45.83%) and also, affect young sheep less than 6 month of age (37.5%). The incidence of encephalitic listeriosis is frequent in females than males. Clinical signs observed in sheep affected with coenurosis are ataxia, incoordination, drowsiness, paresis, head pressing, circling, head deviation, blindness, stiff gait, opisthotonus, feet stamping or walking in straight line, pain response on pressure over the cystic area are usually seen. Computed tomography for coenurosis revealed presence of hypoattinuated structures surrounded with a thick contrast rim from the cyst wall and inflammatory reaction surrounding the cyst. Calcification of the rim of the cyst is found in some cases. Listeria monocytogenes isolates were found to be sensitive to Ampicillin (52.63 %) and Penicillin G (47.37 %). Recovered isolates were resistant to Gentamicin (68.42 %) and Cefotaxime (63.16 %). Our results show a survival rate (41.67%) of treated listeriosis group with Ampicillin. Our erythrogram results in listeriosis group show a macrocytic hypochromic anemia and leukogram result in listeriosis revealed a significant increase in the total leukocytic count and neutrophilia with marked increase in hypersegmented neutrophils. Our serum oxidative and antioxidant results in listeriosis show a significant increase in the levels of SOD and catalase activities and normal MDA value and reduced glutathione. In coenurosis group; a marked increase in the level of SOD and catalase activities with a marked decrease in the GSH value are seen. Our immunological parameters in L.monocytogenes infected sheep show a significant increase in the listericidal activity, nitric oxide and serum lyosozyme. IL-1β values in CSF show a higher increase in non responsive group. Our results show a significant increase in nitric oxide, bactericidal activity and lysozyme value in CSF of responsive group. Nasal cavity and sinus in oestrosis cases clarified the presence of serous to purulent nasal discharges, hyperemia and thickening of the nasal mucosa, congested blood vessels, presence of larvae in different stages of life cycle according to the degree of infestation. Metaplesia of the lining epithelium to goblet cells are seen. The lamina propria shows edema and leukocytic infiltration mainly eosinophils.
