Abstract

The present study demonstrated some biological changes in male rat kidney and testis induced by daily intraperitoneal injection of fractionated dose of hepatotoxin extract from the cyanobacterium, Anabaena oryzae. Destruction of the glomerulus and uriniferous tubules were observed by histopathological findings. The above cyanobacterium showed also the fine structure of some abnormalities. These abnormalities include bloodless capillaries and thick amorphous basal lamina of glomerulus. Moreover, the cytoplasm of the distal tubules showed mitochondrial swelling and destruction. Patholgocial and ultrastructural changes of the testis showed testicular hypoplasia, necrotic spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatid and increased the thickness of the basal lamina. Additionally, abnormal spermatozoa possessing biforked nuclei were demonstrated in the present study. The histochemical observation showed a marked decrease in total carbohydrate, acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides, proteins, DNA and RNA and the presence of large amount of collagen fibres. DDB was found to have protective, curative, and regenerative action on the organs studied.
