Abstract Maize is the most important cereal crop in the world after wheat and rice. In Egypt it ranks first,in terms of acerage and total production. Ceveral fungi and bacteria attack maize, during all stages of the plant growth, inducing considerable losses in grain yield. Blister smut ( common smut) caused by ustilago maydis has been considered as one of the most important diseases of maize. Hence, the work in this thesis was directed towards the study of some physiological and biochemical aspects of the diseases, effect of swing data, estimation of yield losses, varietal reaction to disease and chemical control. These studies were conducted during 1985, 1986 and 1987 seasons at gemmeiza agricultural research station, gharbia governorate, A. R. E. |
