Abstract

One of the significant advances in facial cutaneous laser surgery in the last few years has been the proliferation of radiofrequency (RF) technology. RF energy is a form of electromagnetic energy affects skin by emitting high-frequency radio waves that interacts with the tissue to produce a thermal change. There are two type of RF ablative and non-ablative. RF devices are monopolar (ThermCool TC), bipolar (Polaris), both (Accent), Vacuum-assisted (Lumenis) and combination with other technologies like diode laser (Polaris) and IPL (Aurora). There are many indication of RF include: facial rejuvenation and skin tightening anywhere in the body, moderate to sever acne vulgaris and acne scars, hair removal and vascular lesions as treatment of lymphangioma cicumscriptum, facial venous malformation, telangiectasias and reticular leg veins. Although RF is safe, less expensive, effective and not scatterd or absorbed in upper layer of the skin it also has side effect rang from pain, edema, erythema lasting 24h, crusting, second-degree burns and in rare cases scar and skin depressions due to fat atrophy. The other type of RF is ablative RF or radiosugery which used in surgical management of benign and malignant skin conditions, it is highly effective in cutting the skin lesions with adequate hemostasis at the same time because of good coagulation.
