Abstract ulcerative colitis is a chronic-relapsing, progressive, inflamma¬tory bowel disease characterized by diffuse mucosal inflammation of the colon always involving rectum and it may extend proximally in a contagious pattern to involve the whole colon. the aetiology of uc has not been fully elucidated; however, there is growing clinical and experimental evidence to suggest that the initiation and progression of this inflammatory disorder involves complex interactions among genetic, immune, and environmental factors. the hallmark symptoms of ulcerative coli¬tis are intermittent bloody diarrhea, rectal urgency, and tenesmus. uc therapy can be considered in several categories, topical and oral aminosalicylates are widely utilized for treatment of mild to moderate active uc and they also are efficacious for maintenance of uc remission also corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs have been a major component of uc management. |
