Abstract Roughages and forages ere considered the natural feedstuffs for ruminant animal.. The diet of high producing animals should be supplemented with concentrated feedstuffs in order to sxyrees their genetic potential and hence achieve high production. Fermentation of high amount. of energy-rich feeds in the rumen results in unfavourable ruminal environmental conditions for ferm6ntation of the roughage with a consequent reduction in voluntary intake. In addition, varying roughage ; concentrate ratio in the rations of ruminants is usually associated with mutual ”associtive” effects on digest1bility and feeding value of the ingredients. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of varying clover hay ( R) : barley (c ) on some rumen parameters known to influence rate of fermentation in the rumen where most of the digestion of the ration take. place The object was to ascertain the optimal R : C ratio that could be applied in formulating rations without simultanous reduction in rate of digestion of the mixtures thus avoiding any possible deleterious associative effects with attempts to seperate. the effects of both feeds on the feeding value of each other during metabolism trials. |
