Abstract

Sepsis is a major pediatric health problem worldwide. Sepsis remains the leading killer of children in the developing world. The clinical manifestation of sepsis varies in severity from sepsis to multiple organ dysfunctions. Several candidate genes have been identified as important in the inflammatory response and explain the wide variation in the individual response to infection. Pediatric sepsis caused by several organisms including bacterial, viral, fungal, rickettsial and protozoal infections that can be disseminated by the bloodstream. Several studies have sought to determine many risk factors for sepsis. Pathogenesis of sepsis is consists of several items including; cells, receptors, enzymes, NFkB and cytokines. Mitochondrial dysfunction that occurs in sepsis is the cause for sepsis induced organ dysfunction. Early diagnosis and management of sepsis and septic shock will eradicate morbidity and mortality from these diseases. Surviving sepsis campaign has taken up a worldwide initiative by publishing international guidelines 2008 with a hope to disseminate information regarding management of sepsis for all age groups.
