Abstract

Nurses in hospitals are exposed to different occupational hazards, which may contribute to diseases and work injuries. So, nurse interns must be aware of the hazards in the critical care work environment. This study was aimed at assessing nurse interns; knowledge, performance, and attitude, environmental assessment of work hazards by observation, designing and implementing a program based on assessment data, and evaluating the effect of the conducted program on nurse interns’ knowledge and attitude. The study was conducted in the intensive care units at Mansoura University Hospitals where the nurse interns are trained using a quasi-experimental design on 176 nurse interns. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, an attitude rating scale, and an observation checklist for nurse interns, and environmental assessment observation checklist. The results revealed that most nurse interns reported exposure to work hazards as infection from patient contact, working long hours, and needle pricks. Most nurse interns had very low knowledge, negative attitudes, and inadequate practice regarding hazards at work in the pre-test. After the intervention, knowledge significantly improved from 3.4% to 73.3% (p<0.001), attitude from 9.7% 47.7% (p<0.001), and practice from 29.0% to 39.8% (p=0.032) after the intervention. Multivariate analysis revealed that attendance of the intervention was a positive independent predictor of nurse interns’ knowledge and attitude scores. It was concluded that implementation of the training program led to significant improvements in nurse interns’ knowledge, attitude, and practices. It is recommended that safety policies must be available in each intensive care unit (ICU) and be brought to the attention of all staff at their first encounter with work in ICU, with seminars and booklets addressing occupational health hazards, safety measures, and universal precautions.
