Abstract The literature of different pulmonary mycosis is re”riewed. In this work lung specimens from sixty cases wi th different pulmonary diseases .~ examined macroscopically, histopathologically, and by culture examination aiming to search for pulmonary mycosis, to evaluate its occurrence and trying to correlate its pathology wi~h different pulmonary diseases. The specimens involved were as follow: (I) fifty specimens from patients subjected for pulmonary resection in the form of pneumonectomy, lobectomy or bilobectomy, lobectom: with either lingulectomy or segmentectomy and segmentectomy alon~ specimens from patients submitt,d to open pulmonary biopsy in the form of a wedge biopsy.~other ten specimens were taken as a control from patients submi tte’d to closed mitral valvotomy operation. All the specimens were dissected and examined macroscopically, paraffin sections were prepared and examined by hematoxylin and eosin and special fungal stains, namely Gomori methenamine silver (GMS) and periodic acid Schiff (PAS) stains. All of the specimens were also cultured on specific media. Out of the sixty cases with lung lesions, six were mycotic (IO%) proved by both histo¬pathological as well as culture examination. Of the six mycotic cases reported, three were aspergillosis two were candidiasis, and one was phycomycosis. |
