Abstract Background: Recently, many epidemiological studies have given new insights into lifestyle factors that influence the risk of cerebral stroke. Aim: To identify health promoting lifestyle of elderly patients with cerebral stroke. Method: This is descriptive (retrospective) study carried on 137 elderly patients hospitalized in the neurology departments of Mansoura University hospital and diagnosed with cerebral stroke, patients were interviewed individually by the researcher to collect data. Results: Hypertension, either alone or in combination with other risk factors constitutes the main risk factor for cerebral stroke among the study subjects followed by diabetes mellitus. Smoking, obesity and unhealthy lifestyle as high fat diet, physical inactivity, and poor stress management also had a significant impact on the risk of the disease among cerebral stroke elderly patients. Conclusion: Unawareness of the study subjects about risk behaviors that might lead to cerebral stroke and the importance of avoiding risk lifestyle behaviors such as negative health responsibility, physical inactivity, consumption of unhealthy food and poor stress management. These negative behavioral patterns probably affected the occurrence of stroke. |
