Abstract

The present study is concerned with analyzing Achebe’s authorial strategies in Things Fall Apart and A Man of the People. The stylistic features of Achebe’s style have been, therefore, carefully scrutinized starting with his use of figures of speech, repetition, cohesion and coherence and style complexity. The thesis is therefore devoted to the examination of the linguistic devices and verbal arts that distinguish Achebe’s literary style. It has been shown how he effectively and subtly exploits them in the construction of his narrative to express the culture and thought of his native Igbo in a foreign artistic medium, the novel. The thesis is divided into five chapters: -Chapter one: Introduction and theoretical Framework -Chapter two: Style in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and A Man of the People -Chapter Chapter Three: Grice’s Implicatures in Things Fall Apart and A Man of thePeople -Chapter Four: Speech, Thought and Writing Presentation in Things Fall Apart and A Man of the People -Chapter five: Conclusion The researcher has resulted in the following: 1-Achebe places himself squarely within the European modernist tradition of writing, yet his style is remarkable for its deceptive simplicity. 2-Achebe’s linguistic devices and verbal arts that distinguish his literary style including his speech and thought presentation have been carefully examined. 3- The pragmatic theory of implicature is then applied, in a comprehensive manner, to the analysis of some representative samples of the conversations in the two novels to enhance the understanding and interpretation of the characters’ actions.
