Abstract

Lamiaceae plants (basil, marjoram and thyme leaves) were studied to elucidate their chemical composition including moisture, ash, fat, protein, carbohydrates, fibers, total phenols and minerals Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, Cu, Fe, Zn and Se. Essential oils and phenolic compounds were fractionated. The study evaluated the protective and treatment effects of leaves, essential oils and hydro-alcoholic extracts of basil, marjoram, thyme and their mixtures on liver injury and evaluated the protective and treatment effects of hydro-alcoholic extracts and leaves of basil, marjoram, thyme on gastric ulcer in experimental rats. The liver injured rat groups which protected by marjoram and thyme leaves, treated with basil, marjoram, thyme and mixture of essential oils and the hydro-alcoholic extracts revealed significant increase in final weight, weight gain and weight gain percent, and FER, while there were significant decrease in weight gain, weight gain percent and FER in liver injured rat group treated with basil leaves and significant decrease in weight gain percent in liver injured rat groups treated with marjoram, thyme and mixture leaves. Protection and treatment with basil, marjoram, thyme and mixture of leaves, essential oils and hydro-alcoholic extracts revealed significant increase in total protein, albumin, globulin, HDL ,TAC, CAT , SOD, WBC and PLT and significant decrease in AST, ALT, ALP, A/G ratio, creatinine, uric acid, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, CHO, TG, LDL, VLDL, atherogenic indexes and MDA of serum and blood, also revealed significant decrease in TG, CHO, total lipids and MDA and significant increase in TAC, CAT and SOD of liver tissue in comparing with non treated liver injured rat group. Liver of rats from the groups protected by basil, marjoram, thyme and mixture of leaves or treated with marjoram leaves, essential oils of marjoram, thyme and mixture essential oils or marjoram hydro-alcoholic extract revealed no histopathological changes. The gastric ulcer rat groups which protected by basil, marjoram and thyme hydro-alcoholic extracts or treated with their leaves showed significant decrease in final weight, weight gain, weight gain percent and NO and significant increase in TAC, CAT and SOD and also showed no histopathological changes in tissues of the rats stomach.
