Abstract

Wireless communication systems are gaining popularity especially with respect to mobile phones and wireless data devices because of their ease of use and mobility. Combining the spectral efficiency of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) with the robustness against frequency selective fading and narrowband interference of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is regarded as a very promising basis for future high data rate radio communication systems. The basics of both techniques (i.e. MIMO and OFDM) as well as their combination will be explained in this thesis. In any communication system the transmitter and the receiver have to be synchronized to each other in order to make efficient transmission. Without a proper accurate synchronization method, it is not possible to reliably receive the transmitted data. Synchronization is the most important task that must be performed at the receiver. The whole receiver architecture depends on the synchronization method that is used. One of the main disadvantages of OFDM is its sensitivity to Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO). Even small error in synchronization might lead to a significant loss in the system performance. Furthermore, when OFDM technique is used along with MIMO systems, the task of CFO estimation becomes more difficult because multiple streams transmitted at the same time in the same channel bandwidth. Accurate estimation and compensation for CFO is a major task to be performed for proper reception of data.
